Fact: Fertility issues may arise in either the male or female partners. It is important that both partners get evaluated for infertility which helps assist the specialist in determining the best course of action to treat the problem

Fact: Age is one of the major contributing factors to increasing incidence of infertility in both male and female partners. In female partners who are older than 35 years may face significant problems with ovulation, quality and quantity of the eggs being released. Male partners may face problems such as sexual disorders and low sperm count and motility.

IUI or Intrauterine Insemination is a specialised ART procedure which is recommended to couples facing infertility. In this procedure, washed sperms (to remove dead sperms) are directly added to the uterus of the female partner which helps in increasing the chances at conception.

The IUI procedure begins with the stimulation of the ovaries to enhance follicular development and subsequent release. After which a fresh semen sample collected from the male partner is taken, washed and prepared by the embryologist and further added to the uterus of the female partner for implantation.

IUI may be recommended for couples facing the below mentioned problems:

The IUI procedure must be scheduled to occur before the ovulation of the female partner. Eggs or ova are viable for about 12-24 hours post ovulation and the semen sample must be available when the egg is released.

The consulting infertility specialist may prescribe certain investigations for both male and female partners. For the female partner investigations may include to check for integrity and/or blockages in the fallopian tubes and hormonal levels such as FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone), LH (Luteinizing Hormone), Estrogen and Progesterone. For male partners a sperm analysis may be recommended along with tests for infectious diseases.

Usually a pregnancy may be achieved within 3 attempts when using the partner’s sperm. However the chances of success per month tend to reduce after 3 attempts and further reduce after 4-5 attempts. On an average only 3-4 such cycles are recommended by the fertility specialist.
